AC running but not cooling? What to check first

A few safe checks can help you understand why your Florida home is warming up—and when to call a professional.

Start with the thermostat

If your air conditioner is running but your home is getting warmer, check that the thermostat is set to Cool and the target temperature is below the room temperature. Set the fan to Auto rather than On. A fan set to On can keep circulating air even when the cooling cycle has stopped.

On a very hot afternoon in Ormond Beach or Daytona Beach, a system may run longer than usual. However, a steady rise in indoor temperature, weak airflow or warm air from the vents deserves attention. Note when the problem started and whether it affects the whole home or just one room.

Check the filter and airflow

A dirty filter restricts the air moving through your system. Check the filter and replace it if it is dirty, using the size and type recommended for your equipment. Turn the system off before replacing the filter and make sure the airflow arrow points in the correct direction.

Keep return grilles clear of furniture and leave supply vents open. Closing vents in unused rooms is not a reliable way to save energy and can create airflow problems. If one room is warmer than the others, the issue may involve ductwork, insulation or system balance rather than the thermostat.

Look outside—without opening the equipment

From a safe distance, see whether leaves or vegetation are crowding the outdoor unit. Keep the area clear according to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not remove equipment panels, reach into the fan or attempt electrical repairs.

Coastal conditions add another concern: salt air can contribute to corrosion over time. A technician can assess coil condition, connections and other components during a service visit. Avoid pressure washing the unit; delicate coil fins can be damaged.

Ice, water or burning smells mean stop

Ice on refrigerant lines or the indoor coil is not a sign that your AC is cooling especially well. Turn cooling off and call for service. Restricted airflow and refrigerant problems can both cause icing; restarting repeatedly may make the problem worse.

Turn the system off if you notice a burning smell, unusual electrical noises or water near electrical equipment. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips. Leave refrigerant, wiring and drain repairs to a qualified professional.

What to tell your technician

Share the thermostat setting, when the problem began, whether the outdoor unit is running and any unusual noises or water you have noticed. Knowing the age of the system and when the filter was last changed can also help.

Tomco serves homeowners along the Fun Coast, including Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach and Palm Coast. An inspection can identify the cause before you decide on a repair or replacement. If these safe checks do not restore cooling, contact the team rather than guessing at parts.
