Why your Florida home feels humid—even with the AC on

Cooling and moisture control go hand in hand on the Fun Coast. Here is what a clammy home may be telling you.

Cool air does not always mean comfortable air

Florida's outdoor air carries plenty of moisture. Your air conditioner removes some of that moisture as air passes over its cold coil, but temperature and humidity are not the same thing. A home can reach the thermostat setting and still feel clammy.

A small indoor humidity monitor can help you see patterns. Compare readings over several days, including rainy weather and times when the AC runs less. Persistent condensation, musty smells or visible moisture should be investigated rather than covered up with a lower thermostat setting.

Short cooling cycles can leave moisture behind

An oversized system may cool a home quickly and switch off before removing enough moisture. Other causes of short cycling include equipment faults or thermostat issues. Bigger is not automatically better when choosing replacement equipment.

Keep the thermostat fan on Auto unless your equipment instructions say otherwise. Continuous fan operation on some systems can return moisture from the coil to the living space between cooling cycles. A technician can advise on the right settings for your particular equipment.

Find where moisture enters

Frequent door opening, gaps around windows and poorly sealed ducts can bring humid air into the home. Duct leaks in a hot attic can affect both comfort and efficiency. Cooking, showering and drying clothes indoors also add moisture.

Use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans that vent outdoors. Repair plumbing leaks promptly and keep the clothes dryer properly vented. Do not block ventilation openings or make major sealing changes without considering the home's ventilation needs.

When a dehumidifier may help

A whole-home dehumidifier can provide moisture control when cooling alone is not enough, particularly during mild but humid weather. It is not a substitute for fixing water leaks, drainage problems or an incorrectly sized AC system.

Before recommending equipment, a professional should evaluate the home's cooling system, ductwork and moisture sources. The right solution may be a repair, an airflow adjustment, better sealing or dedicated dehumidification. Tomco can help homeowners in Volusia and Flagler counties understand those options.
